Knit Happens

Hello, my name is Erin and I am addicted to knitting.

I have never been what I considered a “crafty” person. In fact, I pretty much avoided the issue altogether. I have an extreme disdain of anything I view as cheesy, and lets face it, there are a lot of people in the craft world who are practically sculpted out of Gouda. So when my friend Joy started getting all excited about knitting, I was skeptical, to say the least. But one day while I sat across from her at the Daily Grind and watched her little needles go, I became…intrigued. So I bought some cheapo yarn and cheapero needles at hell-mart and gave it a shot. I even started going to a knitting group.

I pretty much sucked at it. In fact, saying I sucked would be a vast overexaggeration of my skill level. So, in true Erin fashion, I quit. As Joy would say, I only play when I can win, and generally I don’t keep doing things I suck at. I liked going to the group though, so I thought I would try learning to crochet instead. Too bad I sucked at that too.

I was still intrigued though; so I decided to give knitting another try. This time, it wasn’t so bad. I wasn’t producing masterpieces, but at least my scarves no longer looked like something a cat made a nest in. It was actually kinda fun. I found myself having discussions about the benefits and liabilities of using wool vs. cotton vs. acrylic. I suddenly knew the difference between worsted, doubleknit, and bulky weight yarn. I began studying the stitch patterns on sweaters with the devotion most people show to say, the whole Jennifer/Brad/ Angelina situation.

I took the final step to true fanatic status this weekend – I bought a set of Denise needles. As long as I just bought the little bamboo ones at Michaels, I could still deny the addiction – it was just a hobby, nothing to worry about, right? But when you drop money on a set, and justify it in your mind that it will be cheaper in the long run – you are a goner.

I'll post pics of the latest project later. After all, a good knitting addict shares the love.
